We had to choose a goal to achieve in the next 90 days and then rate on a scale of 1 to 10 how much we believed we could achieve our goals and how excited we were about our goals. It was then that I realized how important it is to be excited about your goals.

When you’re excited about your goals, you put in the time on a daily basis to make them become a reality. You do whatever it takes to see them through. Most importantly, you don’t allow the challenges and obstacles to discourage you. You know what you want, you’re focused and determined.

Unfortunately we aren’t always excited or passionate about our goals. You might be wondering why that is. I think it’s because we often choose goals that are more about what we think we should be doing, rather than what we actually want to do. It can be so easy to fall into a trap of doing things we thing we’re supposed to do, instead of doing things that actually have real meaning for us.

Another reason why we don’t get excited about our goals is because they aren’t challenging enough. How can we get excited about a goal that we could practically do in our sleep? Our goals should stretch us, provide us with the opportunity to learn new things and meet new people. Our goals are always an opportunity to grow and teach us what else we are capable of accomplishing, raising the bar for the next goal.

This doesn’t mean that your goal has to be exciting. Other people don’t have to be excited about your goals, you do! I know that I have made the mistake in the past of choosing goals that I really didn’t connect with in a meaningful way. They were goals set out of obligation, rather than true inner desire to see them through to their completion. Many of those goals were left undone, incomplete or drawn out much longer than they should have been.

When I’m excited about my goals, I share them with people; I do something every day to get me closer to realizing them. Sometimes I even forget to eat and work on very little sleep because I can’t wait to achieve whatever goal I’m working on. Yes, I still encounter the inevitable challenges that are bound to pop up, especially when you want that goal bad enough, but they have never stopped me from continuing to do whatever I need to.

Excitement about your goals comes from knowing what achieving those goals will mean, not only for yourself, but for those you care about and maybe even the world at large. When you can visualize what life will be like when that goal is achieved, it acts as your inspiration and driving force regardless of what’s going on around you.

What goals are you excited about achieving this year?

I went to a workshop facilitated by Heather Ramsey this weekend.
