I feel like a lot of my blog posts this year have been inspired by the things I have watched on Netflix. \ud83d\ude09 This week’s blog post is brought to you by the inspiration I received from\u00a0Voices of Fire.<\/em> This show features the building of a gospel choir consisting of singers from all walks of life, regardless of their beliefs.<\/p>\n

I’m not a religious person by any means. I haven’t been to church for more than a funeral or a wedding in a long time. That doesn’t mean, however, that I am not moved by gospel music. I don’t know what it is about gospel music, but it moves me in a way that other music doesn’t. I remember being at my father’s funeral and singing a hymn right before I was supposed to deliver his eulogy. I remember being moved to tears and thinking there was no way that I was going to be able to keep it together for the eulogy and then just as the song was done, I felt ready to do what needed to be done.<\/p>\n

It was interesting to see how some of the candidates treated their auditions. It’s amazing how powerful the performances were when the song they sang had a special meaning to them. When they connected with the lyrics in a meaningful way they delivered a powerful performance that moved the judges as well. I’ll be the first to admit that I shed a few tears watching the performances.<\/p>\n

I have realized that there is magic that happens when you connect with the work that you’re doing in a meaningful way.\u00a0 When I’m asked to write something that I don’t connect with deeply, it doesn’t come easily. Don’t get me wrong, I can do it – it’s just not going to flow in the way that it does when the subject matter touches my heart.<\/p>\n

This blog post is happening because I watched a program that moved me. It inspired me to write about the thoughts that came to mind while I was taking the program in. I was motivated by the performances of the potential choir members. It’s beautiful to hear stories of people overcoming struggles of some sort and how they’ve used those experiences to deliver a performance that touches the audience.\u00a0 There’s something to be said for working from the heart.
