{"id":576,"date":"2011-07-17T20:14:42","date_gmt":"2011-07-18T00:14:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harbirzinc.com\/sandradawes\/?p=576"},"modified":"2011-07-17T20:14:42","modified_gmt":"2011-07-18T00:14:42","slug":"surrender","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harbirzinc.com\/sandradawes\/2011\/07\/17\/surrender\/","title":{"rendered":"Surrender"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">I was reading Caroline Myss\u2019 book <em>Defy Gravity<\/em> the other day and I came upon the word surrender.\u00a0 For some reason it gave me pause, and immediately I decided that it would be the subject of my next article.\u00a0 What is it about the word surrender?\u00a0 Why did it seem to be something I needed to give more thought to?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">When I first ponder what the word surrender means, I picture someone waving a white flag.\u00a0 Growing up, surrender meant saying \u201cuncle\u201d if your friend or family member was testing a new wrestling move they learned (I was a bit of a tomboy).\u00a0 Essentially it meant giving up.\u00a0 My first thoughts about the word surrender are definitely not positive ones.\u00a0 To me, giving up meant losing, it also meant admitting weakness.\u00a0 These are two concepts that tend to be generally frowned upon.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing to me that one word can have such negative connotations from one perspective, and yet mean something completely different from another point of view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">My reading of spiritual books and listening to the thoughts and teachings of enlightened leaders, surrender is a necessity.\u00a0 From their point of view it is essential to living a life of peace and grace.\u00a0 To let go and let God is the greatest surrender there is.\u00a0 It means admitting that there is something greater that we are all a part of.\u00a0 Instead of surrender referring to weakness, or losing; it means accepting that you have the strength of the creator within and that worry and stress are completely unnecessary.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">For me, this realization has meant a total paradigm shift.\u00a0 It meant shifting my beliefs from being fear-based to faith-based.\u00a0 Granted, it hasn\u2019t always been easy, but the knowledge has lifted a great weight off my shoulders.\u00a0 To know that my fears, my \u201cwhat ifs\u201d are not needed, is quite a comfort.\u00a0 All I have to do is believe that nothing happens without purpose.\u00a0 Even those experiences that didn\u2019t seem favourable at the time happened for a reason, whether it was to provide insight, or to prevent an even larger tragedy from happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">To that end, Caroline Myss shares that surrender also means giving up the need to know why things happen as they do.\u00a0 Wondering why you didn\u2019t get that job, or why your last relationship ended, isn\u2019t going to change the fact that those things happened.\u00a0 What it is going to do is drive you crazy thinking about all of those \u201cwhat ifs\u201d that really don\u2019t matter in the great scheme of things.\u00a0 You will end up stuck in the past, unable to enjoy the present moment, which is really all there is.\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t sound like an effective use of time, does it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Surrendering to the flow of the universe is a conscious choice that one makes in order to release fear and stress from their lives.\u00a0 No one can make you surrender, and it isn\u2019t going to happen as long as you continue to resist or try to control things that you simply can\u2019t such as the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Every time I need a reminder to let go and let God, I am reminded of a part of the Serenity Prayer: \u201cGod grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference\u201d.\u00a0 My surrender doesn\u2019t mean that I am weak or a quitter, it means that I am, to quote Marianne Williamson \u201cpowerful beyond measure\u201d, and that is empowering knowledge!
